COMMUNITY CENTRE
The word Duhu means "now" in the language of the Dené, known as Athabascan. The Duhu Centre is a place for The People (Dené) to reflect upon their past so they can reconnect with their culture and fully understand the present. Duhu's design direction is expressed through elements of nature, which are highly revered in the Dené community. The river, a geographical element which is highlighted throughout much of the Dene's cultural creation stories, is a large source of inspiration for this project. The space is designed with the curve and flow of the river in mind, invoking a sense of invigoration and fluidity.
As the building used is LEED certified, sustainable materials are to be used throughout. Different stains of reclaimed wood and second-hand leather are featured at Duhu, as well as a juxtaposition between warm, comforting tones and bold, bright colours that create emotional stimuli and visual interest.
